Block of the Month Archives 2023-2024
We (Emma Russell and Mary DeVries) will be doing a block of the month again this year. You will keep all of the blocks you make throughout the season to make something with them at the end of the season.
We decided to try something different this year; each month we will make a stained glass block using raw edge applique, which can be done on your sewing machines. Each block will have a theme relating to the month the block is to be completed. We will have two block patterns available in each of the winter months (January-March) for those who wish to have 12 blocks by June to complete the full year. You can then make a full quilt from the blocks or you can finish each one separately and have a small wall hanging for every month of the year.
Each block will be 8" X 10½” finished. You will need the following to complete these blocks:
• a dark colour for the background (black; navy; charcoal, etc.). Make sure you have enough to cut a 9" X 11½" background piece each month;
• scraps of appropriate colours for the pattern each month (pick contrasting colours that will show up well against the dark background). TIP: Batiks do not fray as easily as other fabrics might;
• Steam-a-Seam (or similar product)
We understand that some of you may not have done raw edge applique before, but we hope that everyone will at least give this a try.
If you have any questions, please give Emma (613-433-3753) or Mary (613-646-7431) a call; we will be happy to assist you.

Towards the end of the guild year, you will receive suggestions on how to join all the blocks together to make a 33’ x 46 ½ ‘ wall hanging. Of course, you can add extra borders/wider borders to turn it into a lap quilt.
