Arnprior & District Quilters' Guild Newsletter - January 2023
President's Message
Happy New Quilting Year!
I hope you had lots of relaxing time to sew over the holidays. I tried to sneak away every chance I could get, even if it was just for 15 minutes of play. In between lots of visitors, I was able to put together my charity jellyroll quilt, a few blocks of the month, and I made over 6 mug rugs for hostess gifts.
Just a reminder that the Quilt Show is coming up fast! April is only 3 months away! Please try to count up the quilts that you are planning to enter into the show. Perhaps some of them have to be finished, bound, or some may need to borrowed back from their new homes for this occasion. I know that I have at least two that I will have to borrow for the event. If you plan ahead, it will make our quilt numbers more significant for a successful show. Please remember that when we enter our quilts in our ADQG show they are not being judged, we only have prizes for viewer's choice. Any quilt that you have made is worthy of showing off, don't feel like it is a competition, everyone is on their own journey. We all had to start at the beginning and progress, the more quilts you make the better you get.
We are considering having a judge available to review your quilts for positive feedback, if there is enough interest. There will be a small fee to have this service done, more information to come. This type of feedback from a judge is very useful if you are interested in ways to improve your quilt work, or are wanting to submit your quilts into juried shows and you are looking for tips.
If anyone is thinking of going to the CQA's Quilt Canada show in Halifax June 8 - 10th, please let me know by email even if you think you would be interested. If we could get a few cars going as a group, wouldn't that be fun?
Can't wait to sit back and relax with a glass of wine and watch our guest January speaker, Andrea Tsang Jackson, on Zoom this month. Read on to find more info on the speaker and the meeting. There will be two door prizes purchased from the store of distinction this month, Auntie Em's. Just a reminder that visitors are always welcome (after pre-registering and paying the $5 visitor fee.)
Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting January 25, 2023.

Program Notes
Social Sew Day
The first social sew day in November went real well, and lots of fun was had by all. Gwen demonstrated how to make journal covers, just in time to make them for Christmas presents and Elaine showed her bags and told us that she would be holding a two day workshop in May to make them.
Check out the Blog post for more information and photos.
The next social sew day is booked for January 26th, the day after our guild meeting. It will be from 9:30 AM to 3 PM, at Bethel St. Andrews United Church in Fitzroy Harbour. (Note: In the original version of this newsletter, the start time was listed as 11 AM. It has moved earlier by popular demand!)
Please send me an email to register for this event, as the room allows us to have about 15 people set up comfortably. Note that you are welcome to bring your sewing machine and extension cord to make progress on your current quilt, or you can bring some hand sewing, it is totally up to you. I love sewing/quilting in good company. It is fun to go around and check out what everybody is working on and maybe learning a tip or two along the way. It is fun, I hope you consider coming to join us, it is a great way to get to know your fellow members a bit better. Bring along your lunch - tea and coffee will be provided.
More information, including a map, is on the Sew Days page.

Retreat
We are a go! A small group, lots of room for more participants.
If you have never gone on a retreat, this is the BEST vacation ever. So just think, no cooking, no cleaning, and you get to sew all day.
You don't have to be a guild member to attend this retreat. We used to have a limit on folks able to attend due to lack of space, but this problem no longer exists.
Refer to the Retreats page on the web site for more information.
If you are interested in attending please get in touch with me by email to joycee.m1946@gmail.com or phone 613-623-5513.

Mystery Quilt
Have you got your Mystery Quilt top done yet? Or maybe even all finished? If not, there is still time to start. It is not a big project so can be completed fairly quickly.
Remember to use the cut off pieces from the Mystery Quilt to make a smaller project for this year's Challenge, a table runner or wall hanging; use your imagination!
Refer to the Mystery Quilt page for all of the details.

Winter Guild Meetings
For our 3 months of hibernation, January, February and March 2023, we have been able to book virtual presentations from some of Canada’s Award Winning Textile Artists! In the upcoming January meeting we'll welcome Andrea Tsang Jackson (bio above). Below are Bio’s of the artists we will be Zooming with in February and March.
February 22
In February, Johanna Masko will be joining us to give us a presentation on Colour and Print
About Johanna Masko
Johanna Masko is an award-winning Toronto-based textile artist and designer. Born and raised just south of Detroit, she holds a Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan. Her mother, an avid textile crafter with a variety of interests, let her start with a needle, thread, and some scraps around the age of four. She has been sewing ever since.
Efficient construction techniques that speed the creative process while also preserving a high level of craftsmanship are a focus in Johanna’s work.
Johanna draws inspiration for her textiles from a variety of unconventional sources. Often called a skilled colourist, she strives to build confidence in both colour and technique in her many patchwork, quilting and cross stitch students.
Let’s Talk About Colour and Print
For many quilters, choosing fabric for a new project is fraught with uncertainty. Where do we begin? Let Johanna Masko help you get going with her lively discussion about working with colour and print in quilts. Spoiler Alert- a scholarly understanding of the colour wheel is not required. Johanna shares many of her sources of inspiration and the methods she uses to make artistic choices for her work, and hopes you’ll walk away with a boost of confidence to do the same for yours.

A huge thanks to those of you who have volunteered to make our guild season great so far, keep up the good work! We hope that everyone can enjoy a beneficial time together by helping out wherever you possibly can. Remember it doesn't have to be a big task, but if we work together it becomes less onerous. -- Vickie MacNabb on behalf of the Executives |
Quilt Show
The quilt show committees are well on our way in the planning stages. We are a little concerned that we are only having one in person meeting prior to the show, but we will be giving you updates as we go along at meetings and in the newsletters. Please mark your calendars off for April 28, 29 & 30, as this is our guild quilt show and we rely on everyone to help out. There will be volunteer lists posted for your convenience in March so you can submit the times you will be available and which tasks you can help with. The Quilt Show page will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.

Tea Room
We will be looking for your help to make pies for the desserts, and volunteer to serve. Most importantly we will be needing pies. In the past we passed out pie plates thereby knowing how many we could count on. We will be doing the same this year so please plan accordingly.

Raffle Baskets
Allison K. and Emma R. have volunteered to put the raffle baskets together for the quilt show. Since our next three meetings are virtual Zoom meetings , they ask that you drop your items off at Marilyn or Rennie's houses at your convenience, when in Arnprior. And for anyone living in or around Renfrew, you can drop your donations off at Emma's house. Just send one of them an email to plan your drop off. You are also welcome to bring along your items to the Social Sew Day in January.
Through the basket draw sales last show (2019) we made approximately $400, thanks to all our donations! That money goes straight into future programming, and helps keep our membership fees down. Win, Win I'd say!
The baskets are usually made into themes. For example, brights (pattern & material), goodies (tea, mugs, fat quarters with matching theme), organizational, baby ( pattern & material), child, etc. The types of items that we are looking for are: fat quarters, panels, thread, patterns (can be used if you don't plan on making again and in like new condition), rulers, scissors, tools that you may have two of, unused boxes of tea, chocolates, neat mugs, spa items such as hand cream, shower get, nail files, baby material & items, a handmade material basket, any baskets and nice boxes, etc.
Remember, in order to be productive in our quilt space we must be organized, what better way to do so is by de-cluttering and parting with those things we just don't use. **All donations are appreciated**
Quilt Raffle Tickets
You can pick up raffle tickets, or drop off money and unsold tickets to Rennie. Just send her an email message to plan your visit to her house in Arnprior.

If there are any concerns, or if you need anything to finish your Jelly Roll Quilt please call or email me at Marilyn.erskine@gmail.com
At present, we have just purchased a roll of batting.
Here are pictures of a few of the Jelly Roll Quilts finished and two others that have been donated. Our display of them at the April Quilt Show is going to be amazing.

Thank you to the guild member who took up my offer to take some of the extra donated material that I had at the Charity night in November to make a Charity quilt. She made this lovely Drunkard's Path quilt top and handed it in at the December meeting. Nicely done!
This red/blue/yellow quilt is a found donation to the guild. Joyce and I volunteer at the Opportunity Shop in Arnprior and this was found in a bag, later finding out that Sue Hodgins made it, didn’t care for it and put it a bag of goodies for the Opp Shop. Thank goodness it was found and rescued. I’ll quilt it and it’ll be part of our charity donations. The Opportunity Shop is run by the Arnprior Regional Health Auxiliary volunteers; proceeds from the shop benefit the Hospital and The Grove Nursing Home.
Refer to the Charity page for more information about participating in our various Charity projects.
Thank you!

Decluttering!
I have been watching some of Karen Brown's Decluttering Challenge. Day 15 was going through your projects-maybe just fabric set aside with or without a pattern, precut kits, patterns, all taking up space. Her one comment that made me think was, "If you aren't going to enjoy doing this project anymore, don't keep it. Maybe keep the fabric in your stash or maybe not. Maybe donate it but don't spend time on things you don't enjoy." Make better use of this space and your time. Karen is giving us all her permission to let it go.

Magazines
Take those quilting magazines that are sitting collecting dust and trade them with a friend for hers/his. Then pass them off again. You will be surprised at the patterns and ideas you will get. We did this last January and it was like getting a gift.

Contacting Guild Members
If you didn't pick up the list of guild members in the fall and you would like to get in contact with any fellow guild members - perhaps to ask about a pattern of a Show-and-Tell quilt, or follow up on something you hear at a guild meeting, or read in a newsletter, please send along an email message to the guild and we'll provide that person's email address and phone number to you. You can reach us at the guild email address arnpriorquilters@gmail.com or with the Contact Form. And participating fellow members can always be reached through the guild Facebook group. The member list is not circulated electronically in order to protect the privacy of your contact information online.
