Arnprior & District Quilters' Guild Newsletter - June 2024
President's Message
Hello fellow quilters,
Hard to believe but another year has gone by and it is time to wrap up another quilt guild season. I look forward to another potluck dinner and the opportunity to meet with you all and enjoy some of your wonderful cooking. And of course your company.
We have planned a fun evening. In addition to the handing over of the Tinner boxes and display of your completed Show and Tell projects we plan a fun night of games. Anne has been working hard to develop BINGO cards so in preparation please bring bingo dobbers, if you have any, or pens or markers. Anything to mark off your cards. I still haven’t seen these cards, but look forward to seeing how she has made quilting bingo cards. Prizes will be provided but don’t expect $1000 jackpots.
We want to thank everyone for your contribution to the guild. This thing cannot work without the help of many. Special mention to Rennie, Nancy and Betty who are stepping down this year after many years. Also to Brenda and Debbie who have faithfully sold the raffle tickets seemingly forever.
So, I’m off to water my flower pots. No wonder I never get my quilting done.
-- Joyce Murray, Co-President

Tinners
Last night. If anyone can’t make the meeting please try to get your tin handed in. I will try to pick them up if necessary. I hope you have enjoyed this project and that we can see some finished items next fall.
I found it was a good exercise, not too time consuming. I could usually complete a block in less than 2 hours.

Quilt Show
Our next quilt show, which was tentatively planned for April 2025, is being postponed until 2026 because the two arenas at the Arnprior Nick Smith Centre will be under renovation at that time. This is very disappointing but we can make the most of it with an extra year to create more quilts for the show!

Library
As this is my last Library contribution to the Newsletter, I want to thank everyone who has helped me through the years that I have been Librarian. It’s a great job to have, to meet all of you as you pick out something from our collection! I’m so happy to welcome Jackie Lavictoire as our new Librarian; I really appreciate her stepping forward to run our Library!!
Please remember to bring your books back, so check all your “reading” places to make sure one isn’t tucked away. You may sign out books for the summer; enjoy them and maybe even make a project or two from them! AND, don’t forget to bring them back in September!
We’ll have our “Guess the Number of Pages” contest again and I hope you win! Start practicing with your books at home………….
Thanks again; being Librarian these last few years has been fun!
See you at the meeting.

We had 43 members attend the meeting on May 22nd, as well as two guests. Our very own Wendy Foster Birch gave a wonderful overview and trunk show of her learning journey on quilting with a specific emphasis on the beautiful free motion work she does.
Our registration is open for next year and remains at $30 again for the upcoming year. We are giving away two free registrations for those current members who renew their memberships by June 19th. Renew now!

Charity
With the end of our in-house meetings, please remember to ask me for another charity top, batting or backings. (Backings are short but I have a few.)
The Bird Blocks for our Raffle quilt are due, I would like to get it finished this summer even though the show has been delayed another year.
Because of the delay, I think I should deliver the Preemies that I have to the Ottawa and Queensway Carleton Hospitals. We still have another two years to accumulate more for the show.
Have a great summer, you may hear from me asking for help to finish the Raffle quilt.
Thanks for everything you’ve handed in this year, everything is truly appreciated.

Quilting-related Documentary
Our guild recently received this e-mail message...
Dear Quilters,
I want to share with you the news about an important film about Marilyn Farquhar, an award-winning quilter from Ontario. I’m hoping you can share this film with your guild.
I made a documentary about Marilyn and her brother’s story, called A Bullet Pulling Thread, and it's coming to TVOntario this Sunday June 16th, 2024 at 9:00 PM.
It will also be streaming online on TVO’s website and available across the country. You’ll be able watch it for free right here also as of June 16th from 9:00 AM (and commercial free!)
Watch the Trailer
Synopsis:
Can quilting change the world? In January 2020, the RCMP killed homeless rights activist Barry Shantz at his home in Lytton, B.C. during a mental health crisis. That morning, his partner called 911 for help. What they got was an army of police officers, but not a single mental health worker. In response to this tragedy, his sister Marilyn Farquhar creates a series of art quilts titled Kairos to process her grief and share her story.
Read Marilyn’s artist statement about this quilts series in this article from Handiquilter.
While bringing Marilyn's story to festivals across the country, we’ve had the good fortune of meeting some wonderful guild members, from Kingston to Chilliwack, from Winnipeg to Whitehorse. Our film is one that has resonated not just because you are quilters, but because we all know someone who is hurting.
We hope that this film shares a message how art helps us heal, and helps generate positive change. If you can, I ask you to please spread the word about this important film in your community, newsletters and any social media!
Best,
Ian Daffern

Workshop Invitation
Our guild recently received this invitation. Are you interested in putting on a workshop?
I am reaching out to you as the event organizer for the First annual Field to Fibre Festival (Sep 29, 2024), hosted by Ottawa Valley Makers and the Beachburg Agricultural Society.
I would like to invite your guild to host a workshop on Saturday, Sep 28, 2024 (the day before). We would promote the workshop and take care of registration. We would reserve a small facility fee to pay for the hall, but pass along the rest of the registration dollars back to your guild to do with as you choose. Is this something that you would be interested in? Tania Bennett Email: fieldtofibrefestival@gmail.com |

Rennie at Quilt Canada!
Our guild member Rennie Hickey is headed off to Edmonton on June 19th where she will have 2 of her pieces on display!
Rennie's appliqued piece was accepted into the juried show. Congratulations Rennie!
And her Dear Jane quilt, which was awarded the Viewers' Choice first prize in our 2023 Quilt Show, will be on display along with winning quilts from other quilt guilds.
In Rennie's words:
"The Dear Jane quilt was originally designed by Jane Stickles, in 1863 during the Civil War. Brenda Papadakis saw the quilt in a museum and decided to remake the pattern in 1996. There are 5,602 pieces in the quilt!"

Sudbury Quilt Show
The organizers of the upcoming quilt show in Sudbury have asked us to pass this information along to you.
Dear Friends in Quilting, Stitchery & Fibre Arts,
The Sudbury and District Quilting and Stitchery Guild is happy to announce our 2024 Quilts on the Rocks (QOR) Quilting and Stitchery Show. This year’s show will be hosted at the Days Inn (former Northbury Hotel) from October 19-20, 2024. The show will be open from 10am to 4pm each day and will include quilting and stitchery displays, a merchant mall, a community quilts program display, a boutique, and a silent auction. Admission is $10 per person and tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door.
In addition to our regular show highlights, we are pleased to have Judy Lyons participating in this year’s QOR. Judy is a specialist in the appraising of traditional and non-traditional quilts, fibre art, needlework, and textiles. She is an accredited member of the International Society of Appraisers and is also certified with the American Quilters Society (AQS). We welcome anyone to take advantage of the opportunity to have their quilt or stitchery item appraised during our show. You will receive a written document confirming the age, identification, constructions, workmanship, and up-to-date unbiased estimated value of your quilt, art quilt, stitchery or garments. Please contact Kathryn McIlmoyle (705-822-1113) to book an appointment for Saturday or Sunday. The cost is $60.00 for appraisal, paid directly to Judy.
Please note that our show location has rooms set aside for show attendees; the code for your reservation is “quilt show” and rooms will cost $119 per night. Call 705-675-5602 to make your hotel reservations before September 19th, 2024. Unfortunately, new hotel management has closed the in-hotel restaurant and cannot guarantee it will be reopened by October. Despite this, there are many great restaurants within a few minutes of the hotel, and we are happy to make recommendations if you need them.
If you have any questions, would like to pre-purchase tickets, or would like paper copies of publicity materials, please feel free to go to our website (www.sdqsg.com), email us (sdqsg@gmail.com), or call Kathryn (705-822-1113) or Ashleigh (705-677-8704).
Our guild is looking forward to hosting Quilts on the Rocks in October. Thank you for your support and we hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Ashleigh McBain
