Arnprior & District Quilters' Guild Newsletter - May 2022
President's Message
President's Message
We are about to embark on our first face to face meeting next week. I am so excited to be able to see everyone together at last. Hope you can make it! We hope to make the atmosphere safe for all.
May is the month we have the general meeting. This is where we will discuss next year's budget and meetings going forward; so don't miss the opportunity to hear the news firsthand.
As you may know Brigid Whitnall is stepping down from the Executive Program position after the June meeting; therefore we will be asking everyone to consider helping out to put together a Programs team of 4 - 5 people to take her place. Yes, we know it will be pretty hard to fill her boots, as she has done a wonderful job so far this year! More hands make less work for all, that is why we suggest the team approach is probably best.
We will also have sign-up sheets for next year's Quilt Show planning committee (about 10 volunteers needed), and for the Arnprior Agricultural Fair which will be held July 29, 30, and 31st (8 people needed).
Reminder! One and a half moths left till we reveal the President's Drunkard Path Challenge & your UFO Challenges! Will your project be ready? I will have to move on it, if mine is to be ready in time for the June meeting! I just haven't found the right layout yet. I am still auditioning many possibilities, oh, how to decide on the right one!
Hope to see you at the meeting, Wednesday, May 25th at 7 pm.
Vickie MacNabb

Program Notes
Welcome Back to In Person meetings!!
We have two somewhat social meetings in a row. For May, it’s our garage sale .. see the ad of the lovely things you could be buying. June is going to be a social in the park with our challenges voted on by members who attend. You won’t want to miss either of those. Of course, both provide you a chance to catch up with friends you may not have seen in a while.
We have our AGM in May and we’ll be looking for a program team, someone to book speakers or activities, workshops coordinator (s), retreat organizer, and others to assist with other activities around the guild. We typically only have half our members at meetings, but it does take a village to make it all work smoothly. If you have not volunteered in the past, or if it’s been a number of years, please consider putting your name forward to help your guild be all it can be. If you would like to help, but can’t attend meetings in the evening, perhaps you can organize something with a helper. You’ll meet new people, and you know you already have something in common … you quilt.

June - A night in the Park - June 15th with rain dates planned if needed
We started these crazy times with a show and tell of our challenge quilts in Robert Simpson Park and thought we would cap off our 20th year celebrations with another social night in the same location. It will be low key, we have decided that it’s going to be all about being social, enjoying each other’s company and looking at quilts. We are not going to have food or drink available, but feel free to bring a coffee, tea or water along with you. Don’t forget a lawn chair, and bring an additional lawn chair for your quilts to hang on. That way, if it’s too windy to set them up in the gazebo, we can have them draped on chairs.
Don’t forget, there will also be BIG BIG Prizes for the challenge quilts … it’s going to be loads of fun.
Bring your best Covid Challenge quilts, President’s Challenge, any finished Block of the Month quilts, tops or maybe just blocks that you want to donate… let’s do a huge Show and Tell of what we’ve been up to in the last few years.

Challenges
Charity
As our Charity night in March showed, we have made an impact and are very appreciated for our charitable endeavours.
Here is approximate sizing for quilts we donate. But any size is acceptable and will find a home.
PREEMIES: 24” square
TWIN: 60x72” or larger (all beds at Interval House are twin beds) Lanark County Interval House and Community Support
QUILTS of VALOR: 55x70” Quilts of Valour
VICTORIA QUILTS: 50x70” (all cotton only) Victoria’s Quilts
FIDGET QUILTS: 24”square or larger
FULL. 78x80”
QUEEN 84x90”
KING. 102x90”
At the May meeting we will be handing out Fidget Quilt packages, batting for Preemies to those who require it, and Guild labels for the Preemies.
Please remember to cut a few 2 1/2” strips for us. These will be gathered at the May meeting in anticipation of a future sew-day to sew more Charity quilts. Because of Covid outbreaks, a sew day has been put on hold. And also bring any “Pick Up Sticks“ or “Bethlehem Star” blocks or quilts you may have for us.
There will be a lot of different materials for sale at the Charity tables. Bring your Loonies and Toonies.
During the month of April, the guild donated two quilts to the Campbell family who’s home burnt down. More on that from Debbie below.
-- Marilyn Erskine, Charity
From Debbie Cauvier:
Along with fellow Guild member Brenda Greeley, I had the pleasure of presenting Wendy Campbell (with her two granddaughters, Payton and Skyler) two of the guild’s lovely quilts at her property in White Lake. Wendy and her husband Doug lost their home in a fire back in January. Wendy’s late mother, Myrna Code was a quilter. Wendy lost a lot of her mother’s quilting items in the fire. Wendy was thrilled with the quilts and thanks the guild tremendously.
The quilts were made by guild members. Marilyn provided the striped one which was made by Mary Cohan-Pekarchuk for the Summer 2021 Scrap Challenge. I put together the Pick Up Sticks block quilt - funny enough four of the blocks were mine! I added borders, backing - I substituted the backing provided with flannel I had as the other fabric just didn’t work with the quilt, and I did the quilting on it. Because Wendy has a flower growing business we decided the one I put together with the sunflowers border was most appropriate for her. Brenda came with me as she knows Wendy from their high school days and knew her mom as well.
Library
The hot weather last week brought me up short!! The garden is calling AND so is my quilting room! A dilemma for sure… But although it’s great to be outside tending to plants, there are still many days when rain or too hot temperatures make me head for a session of planning, cutting and sewing in my “happy room”! I have projects in mind (and in pieces) that I would like to get finished up.
With this month’s Guild meeting being a Garage Sale, the Library will have a table, too! There will be magazines and books that will be available; nothing will be priced, but there will be a donation box for whatever you’d like to give. AND if you have any magazines, etc., that you are finished with you are more than welcome to put them on the table, too.
The Library, itself will not be open this meeting, but if you have any books from our Library please bring them back. I will be re-organizing and preparing a comprehensive list of our books that will be shared next year so I need to have all that we have. Thank you!
Our Library prize for May consists of 3 quilting magazines (2 older and 1 new) and a fat quarter! Good luck!
Looking forward to seeing you SOON!

We are at the time of year where it is time to renew our memberships. These renewal forms will be available on the website. You can renew membership on-line and will be able to pay your money by e-transfer, or by cheque. If you renew before June 16th, you are in the running to win a "free membership". Two lucky members will win it!

How Can You Help?
The numerous activities available through our guild rely on volunteers and as we return to more in person activities, there are a number of open positions on which these activities depend.
Program positions that are open
I have written these as single person, but many could benefit from more than one person. Don’t be shy if you are doing this on your own, you’ll meet new people along the way who will come in to help.
Program Lead - member of executive group, booking speakers, confirming speakers and coordinating with other members of the team for overall programs, workshops, etc. Working closely with the charity person if you want things like blocks of the month to go to charity, or workshops to assist with a charity project.
Workshop coordinator - working closely with the Program lead to piggy back on recent and upcoming speakers to book workshops, take in registration, confirm payments and book venues for the workshops (either in person or via zoom)
Retreat coordinator - plan, advertise and book retreats for the guild members. Confirm venues (either in person, in town or out, or via Zoom). Take in registration and confirm payments.
Block of the month, challenges, other activities - help plan, announce and explain the monthly blocks, annual challenges, etc. Keep people informed with samples and explanations of the steps to get the items finished. These generally terminate in June, but with 2023 being a quilt show year, you may want them done sooner.
Other positions that are open
These are part of the overall enjoyment of your programs, but don’t liaise directly with the Program team.
50/50 and Raffle Ticket sales - a few people who are available early to sell 50/50 and raffle tickets at the meetings.
In person meeting set up - Still under discussion - People needed to place tables around the room when at in person meetings, chairs can be looked after by each person attending so that it becomes self-serve. If desired, we can go back to set groups of volunteers who could sign up for one meeting per year.
Quilt show planning committee - Consider yourself volunteered for this one! Everyone who is a member will have a job to do for the quilt show in 2023. You can choose to be part of the planning committee (which is generally about 10 people) and you can also be part of the fun at the show itself, either during set up, take down, or/and during show hours. This show raises enough money for us to be able to offer the lowest guild prices around, so let’s make this the best show of 2023! We need someone to lead the planning committee, other jobs include avertising, vendors, quilt registration, raffle tickets, etc …

I was delighted to go to the Common Thread Quilt Guild's show on Mother's Day weekend. It was so much fun to get out and to see some beautiful quilts again. I was pleased to see Covid precautions in place - I felt very safe!
I had the opportunity to finally meet two of our newsletter advertisers who, due to Covid stay-around-home, I had not yet had a chance to visit in their shops - Michelle of Watergirl Quilt Co quilt shop in Prescott, and Emma of Auntie Em's Scrapbooking & Quilting in Cornwall. I also had a chance to catch up with Mari-lyn of Bytowne Threads. All 3 (independently) asked me when our next quilt show will be, and expressed interest in participating in our vendor mall. Excitement for our quilt show is mounting!
