Arnprior & District Quilters' Guild Newsletter - October 2019
President's Message
Happy October! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.
One thing I give thanks for is the size and diversity of our quilting world. We were on vacation to visit Paulette's family and then off to a family wedding. Along the way we dropped into a variety of quilt shops - revisiting old favourites, discovering new hidden gems. While at a quilt show on the North Shore of Lake Superior we were in a quilt shop built in a former prisoner transfer bus. The lady who owns it travels all over NW Ontario popping up at various places where quilters congregate. What an idea?
From time to time we all should look at things we own and see them creatively, with new eyes. A prison bus into a quilt shop? A piece of fabric we aren't sure why we bought made into a treasured quilt? Have fun!

October Library News
Jingle Bells!!! You know it’s coming, so this month’s new book, “Merry Makers”, compiled by Lissa Alexander, will help you with ideas and patterns for Christmas gifts and small quilts. There are so many beautiful things to make that you will want to make more than one! I’m still out in the garden trying to get it set for winter but I know, like you, I’ll be in my sewing room soon! We were thrilled with the number of books borrowed last month and hope you will all come and have a browse at the meeting; there is a wide variety – something for everyone!! AND, if you have a book out on loan, please remember to bring it back to the Library at our meeting. Our ‘guess the number of pages’ book this month is a little different in that it shows how to make 3D flowers to machine applique – 20 of them! It is a beautiful book with incredible photos and step by step instructions. Don’t miss making a guess! -- Nancy (and Lucy who will return soon from Cape Breton! |
Program Notes
After a very productive meeting in September, 42 people signed up for the Black and White Secret Block Challenge. What a great response! We have divided the signed members into 4 groups – 2 groups have 10 members (thus 10 blocks to make) and 2 groups have 11 members (they get to make 11 blocks). We will have printed copies of the names in each group on display at the October meeting for your reference. Details for the construction of your blocks are noted on the Challenges page.
Don't forget about the CQA challenge. We would really like to have our guild represented at the Quilt Canada show in Edmonton in June, 2020.
Our guest speaker in October will be Melanie MacDonald with her trunk show displaying her talents with paper piecing.
Mary DeVries will be our demonstrator for the October Coffee Time Demo. Be sure to check out her valuable hints.
And finally, don't forget to wear your name tag at the guild meetings. You could win a prize just for letting everyone know your name.
-- Joyce Murray, Anne Cruickshank, Jackie Lavictoire, Sue Hodgins
Meeting Hosts
The Churn Dash quilt block group led by Penny Carruthers is responsible for setting up and assisting at the October meeting, and for providing the snacks. We hope to provide this year's group lists at the October meeting. We encourage any returning members to register soon so you don't miss out on any of the guild activities, and to allow Penny to build out the groups. Special thanks to the Log Cabin group led by Janet Brownlee for doing a great job at our September kick off meeting. Block of the Month
Have you made up the Churn Dash block and created something from it that you'll be bringing along to the October meeting? More information Lug a Mug
Please bring your own mug to the meetings to show you kindness to the environment and to help limit the amount of garbage that Frank has to haul out at the end of the meeting. Our rent does NOT include garbage removal! |
Charity Sew Day
The three of us managed to complete three quilt tops on the recent Sew Day, October 17 at Sew Inspired.

Getting Guild Information
The highlights of our September meeting are featured in a blog post that includes photos of our guest presentation and more. And the pictures of the show and tell quilts are also posted shortly after each guild meeting on the Show & Tell page which can be accessed any time from OUR QUILTS. We hope to provide our 2019-2020 membership list at our November meeting. We are very conscious of your privacy so only the information that you authorized in your 2019-2020 membership form will be included. The list is only distributed on paper and not in any electronic format again for your privacy and security. The list is a very handy resource that enables you to directly contact members of the executive and their committees, and others in your quilt block groups - we hope you feel comfortable being included in it. You've likely noticed that your email address is not displayed to others in our email communication with our guild members. In addition to the monthly meeting and newsletter message, I have been sending a few additional messages between meetings as other information that might be of interest to you arises. I welcome your feedback on the frequency and content of these email messages. We appreciate your feedback on all aspects of our guild, and you can contact us from the web site Contact page or by sending an email message to arnpriorquilters@gmail.com -- Janet Brownlee, Communications & Newsletter Editor |
