Arnprior & District Quilters' Guild Newsletter - October 2023
President's Message
Hi everybody.
It’s that time of the month again. Hope you are excited to be coming to our second meeting of the year. We were pretty pleased with the turnout and the meeting in general last month. Hope you agree. I was particularly glad to have snack time return. Just back from the executive meeting. We are indeed fortunate to have Lucy Shorey working as our program person and she seems to doing a great job. Lots of different and interesting guests. She also hopes to have some classes upcoming.
Please encourage our executive and if you have any ideas speak to one of us or use the suggestion box. It is there for a reason. And don’t forget we still have need of a secretary.
Remember Anne's mission for the year. Have fun!! I know you won’t be interested in everything we try to bring forward but hopefully there will be something for everyone.
-- Joyce Murray, Co-President

At this October meeting, we welcome two sisters with different quilting styles: Carol Darou and Cathy Price.
Carol is a professional long arm quilter and loves making quilts with earthy colours, and more recently working with wool. Carol’s accomplishments include winning first prize at the 2023 CQA National Juried Show, in the category Quilts from Patterns, Books, Magazines or Social Media for her “Round My Wooly Garden” quilt. Carol also placed 3rd in the TrendTex challenge in 2021. Cathy likes quilts that are different and her colours are a lot brighter. Cathy teaches on a variety of topics at both local guilds and area quilt shops. They are both members of the Lanark County Quilters Guild and very involved in guild activities. Their Trunk Show will feature approximately 40 quilts that they have made over their almost 20 years of quilting. -- Lucy Shorey, Programs |
Program Notes
Block of the Month (BOM)
We hope you have tried the Block of the Month that was revealed at the September guild meeting. As we told you last month, each block this season will be a stained glass block. The blocks will have a theme relating to the month the block is to be completed. As we only have nine months during the guild season, we will be providing three extra patterns throughout the season so that you will have a full year of stained glass blocks.
if you do not have access to a computer and would like a paper copy of the instructions and patterns, let me know (613-433-3753) and I'll bring them to the meeting.
You can find the BOM instructions on the website.
-- Emma Russell (and Mary DeVries)

Library News
Sewing and quilting days are back! I spent today sewing with a friend – what a super way to enjoy a day! Friendship and quilting!
There’s no end of projects to plan and sew and our Library if full of ideas and instructions to keep you busy now and for months to come. With Christmas coming soon, you likely have lots of gifts planned, but, if you need something new to make, take a peak at the new book I bought at Sew Inspired called “Sew Sustainable” compiled by Jennifer Warren. There are 22 items made from your stash fabrics or your old T-shirts including lots of shopping bags, furoshiki wraps, and even a hand duster. It will be ready for you to borrow this month!
We will have our “Guess The Number of Pages” book and, thanks to your shopping of our books last month, there is also a fat quarter included. Good Luck!
Hope your gardens are put to bed and that you are back to your favourite pastime – QUILTING!
See you at the meeting,
-- Nancy Hayley, Librarian
Tip: If you're wondering if a particular book is in our guild library collection, use this web site's Search to look for the book name or author, or any other text that's in the new Library Catalog document.
September Guests' Presentation
Madonna Oliver from Paisleys Quilt Shop and some representatives of the sewing group from the St James Anglican Church in Carp, Gillian, Lois and Lise, presented at our first meeting of our Arnprior & District Quilters' Guild on Wednesday, September 27th, 2023. They brought the five panels they handmade using a combination of appliqué, embroidery and quilting. Created to represent the four seasons in Carp, as well as Peace, Love, Hope, Joy and Faith, Madonna explained with slides the steps of their journey, including how they had obtained a grant for community involvement and evolved the idea of these panels. One of the group was an artist and the others had varying degrees of sewing experience. With time and collaboration, meeting at Paisleys weekly, they evolved the ideas which have resulted in these spectacular panels. They shared their experience of how they evolved and developed the vision for them, including helping the members of this group to develop the skills needed to sew these different techniques as well as connecting them to each other and their community. These panels now hang in their churches on a rotation. They answered questions and had the panels on display during our meeting, welcoming our members to come over for a closer look at the break. We are grateful to Madonna and her sewing group for sharing their experience.

As a quilt guild member of the Canadian Quilters' Association (CQA) we were eligible to submit one entry from a member of our guild to the 2023 CQA Member Guild Challenge. We received one entry, from Leslie Whitby, and her entry was judged and displayed at Quilt Canada in Halifax in June. Thank you Leslie for representing our guild so nicely at Quilt Canada.

2023-2024 Meeting Dates
Our meetings are typically held on the 4th Wednesday of every month with December and June being the exceptions when the meetings are a little earlier. While the 4th Wednesday is typically also the last Wednesday of the month, this year is a real rarity with three of the meetings in months with five Wednesdays! Just remember - we typically meet the 4th Wednesday of the month.

Communications
Thank you to Tina and Emma for rounding out our little Communications team again this year. Tina facilitates the guild Facebook page and group, and Emma is our talented guild photographer who finally got a great workout last year with so many in-person meetings and the quilt show.
Guild Facebook Group
Have you joined our guild members-only Facebook Group yet? If not you are missing out on all the fun. This is a great way to get to know your fellow guild members, to ask questions, learn a new block, a new tip or trick. Last year we saw some lovely photos of the Block of the Month quilts being assembled and finished off, and much more.
Tina is doing a fantastic job of monitoring and facilitating the activity in this group. Thank you Tina for this wonderful guild initiative!
Hope to see you in our Facebook group soon. Click/tap here to join the group now.
