Arnprior & District Quilters' Guild Newsletter - October 2024
President's Message
Welcome October!
October is one of the most beautiful months for us in Ottawa Valley. The spectacular views of the fall colours remind me of beautiful arrays of batiks that are available. The orange, reds, greens, and yellows of the fallen leaves make me think of fat quarter packs. All these stunning colours are inspirations to recreate and be captured in our quilts. After all, we are artists. We use fabric to express our creativity and our compassion.
I am very excited to attend the quilt retreat at the end of the month. For those who have been before, you know how much fun it is. If this is your first time, or you are wondering if you should attend, please do, you won’t regret it.
I can’t express enough how much the executive relies on each member to contribute to the success of our guild year. We have divided the membership into groups by last name. When it is your turn, kindly volunteer. For that one month, we ask that you bring treats for the break, to help set up tables and chairs and other responsibilities depending on what is happening that evening. When it is your turn, I hope you answer our call for help.

- Guests are welcome to participate.

- Stay tuned to the guild website and monthly newsletter for the list of themes for the year.
Quilter's Recycling Table
Did you do any purging or cleaning in your quilting space over the summer? Our Quilter's Recycling Table will be available again in October! This is an effective way to engage in sustainable quilting practices by bringing or taking items to the Guild’s Quilter’s Recycle Table. It’s a win for everyone! A reminder that if the item you brought is not picked up, you are responsible for taking it back home with you.

* * NEW ** Two Part Show and Tell
Starting in October our Show and Tell will have TWO PARTS! We work hard on our quilts so why not show them off! For the first part (the new part), we are asking you to bring your fall themed quilts too! These can include pumpkins or witches, sunflowers or scarecrows, turkeys or apple picking, or fall colours which are absolutely spectacular right now. We will put your quilts on display at the beginning of the meeting with your name on them. Members can peruse the quilts during the meeting and know who to ask if they have questions about them.
The second part will be our regular Show and Tell. Bring a quilt or two to show members what you have been working on this summer and fall. Be prepared to say a few words about your quilts as they are being shown off.
Let’s take pride in our quilting accomplishments and inspire others!

Tinners
Our Tinners program is starting up at the October meeting.
Tinners is an optional program where other Tinners participants will make blocks for you and you will make a block each month for a different Tinners participant. You decide the theme of your blocks and you'll load up your tin (or other container) with a list of the criteria for the blocks and any fabric you want to be included in each block.
Bring your tin to the October meeting and you'll go home with a different tin to make a block for someone else.
See the Tinners page for more information about this program.

Block of the Month
Be sure to bring your blocks of the month (and the bonus HSTs) to the meeting and enter a draw to win the blocks. The winner can choose to keep the blocks to make a quilt, or donate them to our Charity initiatives.
There's still time to make one or both of these "square in square" blocks in fall themed colours. The instructions are available from our Block of the Month page.
Thank you Vickie for these fun September blocks, pictured below.

English Paper Piecing Workshop
Our English Paper Piecing workshop is coming up on Saturday November 2 at Sew Inspired in Arnprior from 11am - 2pm. It will be led by Brenda Payer, a long-time guild member and an award-winning quilter.
We will be working with hexagon templates to create a Grandmother’s Flower Garden block. Fabric pieces will be basted onto paper hexagon templates and then sewn together to create a shape. We will go over how this shape can be added on to or used separately in a quilt project.
See the Workshops page for more information. You can sign up online or at the October meeting.

Quilt Show
Our next quilt show, which was tentatively planned for April 2025, is being postponed until 2026 because the two arenas at the Arnprior Nick Smith Centre will be under renovation next spring. This is very disappointing but we can make the most of it with an extra year to create more quilts for the show!

We are continuing the distribution of our charity endeavours from our ambitious members.

Many of you have taken a Panel Challenge quilt package, there are a few more! They are at our meeting location to be given out to anyone willing to take on this challenge.
We accept any quilts, Christmas placemats , fidget quilts and Preemies. Thank you.
Bird blocks are being handed in and they will be made into our Raffle Quilt for the 2026 show.

Gwen's Tip
I have a tip that I think you might welcome.
I volunteered to bring home a lap quilt and a table runner from my daughter's place to wash for her. It was an "Oh NO!!" moment when I opened the washing machine. I had thrown in 2 Shout Out sheets with the quilt but the red/burgundy backing had run all through the beige background to make it a deep pink. I had prewashed all fabric before making the quilt. I washed it again with 4 Shout out sheets and another product. Not a whole lot better. I soaked it in the bathtub and it still looked awful. I prayed. How was I going to tell Jamie the quilt I made for him less than 2 years ago was ruined? Then I went to Google. Here is what I read: " I used my bathtub and let a quilt flimsy, donated to our church quilt group, full of red bleeding, soak for about 2 hours using Dawn and hot water. Then I refilled the tub with Dawn and hot water and repeated for another 2 hours. The cure was amazing. I would have repeated the process again if I had needed it." After several rinses in the washer, Jamie's quilt is back to the original colour. I thought I should share this in case it happens to you. -- Gwen Pennings |
Note from Gwen re her upcoming Machine Binding Demo at the October meeting:
Machine binding may not be what you would like to do on a quilt that you are entering into a competition, but it saves hours for quilts made for charity. Like cursive writing and free motion quilting, it takes a little practice but with some patience you can achieve results that will please you. I will go over corners, joining strips, joining ends, (if there are new quilters in the group), sewing the second time around as well as faux binding if there is time. You may want to bring pen and paper to take notes.

Fabric kits were provided to participants in this competition category, who then made a block of their choice.

The sideways camper sporting the red ribbon at the bottom right of the photo above, was made by a local youth quilter and grade 10 student Holly McDermid from Stittsville.
Holly was also awarded first place AND a new Janome sewing machine for this quilt in the 2024 Canadian Quilters' Association National Juried Youth show in Edmonton in June.

We were delighted that Rennie brought her Day Lilies quilt that was in the CQA juried show in Edmonton in June, to our September meeting Show and Tell so we could see it!
Bridget O’Flaherty, the "Sustainable Quilter" has recently posted Part 7 of her Sustainable Quilting series of articles. In this article she's challenging us to rethink our fabric accumulation habits through the concept of a "Fabric Offset".
