Our Quilting in the Valley 2017 featured over 340 quilted items made by members of our guild, the memorable Canada 150 exhibit of unique quilts made by eastern Ontario quilt guilds, door prizes, vendor mall, tea room, and our "Quilter of Distinction", Edna Snyder who recently celebrated her 90th birthday!
To visitors to our show, thank you for coming and we hope that you enjoyed your visit. And to our guild members who provided quilts for the show, volunteered over the weekend, or on the organizing committee, all your contributions were truly appreciated. Show visitors voted for Viewer's Choice, Best Baby Quilt, and Best Other Quilted item. Prize winners are pictured below Happy Spring everyone!
Mother Nature seems to be confused about which season it is this year, so if we keep saying "spring", maybe it will happen. I too may be slightly confused as I still have all my winter decorations up and am only replacing them because of the date on the calendar. We are only about a month away from the quilt show. There's lots of quilting to be done between now and then. If I bind a few quick projects, they'll be done. Then onto quilting some projects that I would like to have in the show. Don't forget about your red and white president's challenges. A great big thanks to everyone who was at the February meeting and who helped us get the quilt tops done for the CQA Big Quilt Bee. It was loads of fun, and very productive too. A reminder to arrive early and bring lots of small bills for our garage sale this month. The folks selling should be set up by 6:30 or so. We are still starting the meeting with our speaker at 7:00, you'll have an opportunity to shop before the meeting and we'll have a slightly extended break where you can shop then too. We have lots happening, it's very exciting! I better get sewing, that binding does not attach itself! Imagine, self sewing binding instead of, or as well as, self driving cars!! Hehe Happy Quilting, Brigid Whitnall President Anna Cornel recently taught this Caryl Bryer Fallert pattern to 10 ladies. Our bright background fabrics varied so we were anxious to see how the colours would play across the backgrounds. We came with most of our cutting done, so we were able to start our sewing almost right away. This is always a great workshop when one can do that! The second last step is to turn the tucks so one get to see the results, and only one student was able to do this before going home but it was very encouraging for all of the rest of us to see her results! We are looking forward to our April guild meeting and the quilt show to see the class' "show and tell." -- Gwen Pennings, Programme Quilt Show Update
Eight awesome completed High Tech Tucks projects are at the quilt show! Our annual "garage sale" was a great way to start off this meeting with many interesting items to choose from to fill those inevitable gaps in our own stashes! Many members wore happy smiles as they loaded up on new goodies. Lana Dean gave us an update on the charming log cabin quilt with the creative farm scene on the back which she showed us at our February meeting. She made the quilt along with a number of other quilters for auction at the Ottawa Valley Farm Show in mid March. It was sold for a whopping $7,600 which was all donated to CHEO (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.)
Barb shared many tips with us including:
Barb's son is fascinated by wolves as evidenced by these 2 quilts in her collection. Barb finished off her captivating show with her personal Canada 150 quilt project in which she included the crests of the 3 provinces in which she's lived: Ontario, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. Barb owns the Quilters Inn quilt shop in Cameron ON where she also teaches classes and does long arm quilting for others. See Barb's Facebook page for more information. www.facebook.com/QuiltrsInn Enjoy these many more photos of Barb's quilts and other items that she shared with us. Happy Spring everyone!

We all pitched in to construct quilt tops for the Canadian Quilters' Association (CQA) Big Quilt Bee. Our guild is joining guilds from across Canada to make quilts for Ronald McDonald House Charities, in celebration of Canada's 150th birthday. Our guild members have been busy constructing these 12 1/2 inch blocks which incorporate at least one piece of a special Canada fabric. Approximately 135 blocks were constructed at our very successful "slab block" workshop in early February, and many more were brought in by guild members. After an exciting evening of sorting the blocks, designing the layouts, pinning blocks, the whirring of several sewing machines, and activity at various ironing stations, our guild members assembled the blocks into 13 quilt tops! Way to go quilters! Refer to the CQA web site for more information, including instructions for the blocks using the “slab block pattern” compliments of Cheryl Arkison, and sample blocks. See the teams at work, and the final results in these photos. Hello everyone, I am watching the snow blow around as I write this. Isn't February just a great month to quilt! Our quilt show is only a few months away ... yikes ... better get some items ready! That also means that spring is only a little while off. For those who may have started to see the Canada 150 passports around Arnprior, please note that the only part of the quilt show which is free is entrance to the tea room and special Canada 150 travelling exhibit. Admission to the show is still $6.00 and includes the market mall. Did you get some great ideas from our demo night last month? I know that I walked away with a couple of tips that I will implement. Now if I can get someone to volunteer to come fold my fabric neatly .... haha I have a better chance of getting the new executive in place by March!! I have actually started and have two shelves out of 12 done! This might take a while. I am really looking forward to our February meeting when we will assemble some tops for the CQA big quilt bee. We have enough quilt blocks for 8 quilts now and may have enough for 10 by the end of the month. Don't forget to bring in your finished blocks. Happy Quilting, Brigid Whitnall President The February 4th "slab block" workshop was a resounding success! In a few hours, 12 guild members produced 134 blocks for quilts destined for Ronald McDonald Houses across Canada as part of the Canadian Quilters' Association's Big Quilt Bee in celebration of Canada's 150th birthday. Quilt guilds from across Canada will be making and donating 12 1/2 inch blocks incorporating at least one piece of a special Canada fabric. Our guild is delighted to participate in this exciting project.
Brigid reports, "We had lots of fun and laughs .... although the room would also get very quiet at times when everyone was hard at work. We had lots of the residents drop by to see what we were doing and they all enjoyed having us there as well. It was a great day of socializing and teamwork... not to mention how productive we were. I had no idea how many blocks we would have." And from Beth, a guild member and resident of Island View, "I enjoyed the day and I also learned a few more things about quilting. Several staff have said they would like the quilters back. They were impressed with the idea of helping people with the quilts." That makes a total of 187 slab blocks which we'll begin piecing together at our February 22nd guild meeting, "hands on" charity night. Refer to the Canadian Quilters' Association (CQA) web site for more information and instructions for the blocks using the “slab block" pattern” compliments of Cheryl Arkison. The recent ruler bag workshop led by our guild vice president Chris Gordon was a very productive day as participants constructed this custom carry all bag for multiple rulers, patterns, and quilting tools when sewing away from home.
Photos follow bag construction through to some completed bags at this awesome workshop. Our guild recently donated a quilt to The Grove Nursing Home in Arnprior for their palliative care room. Guild members made the multi-colour blocks, which we originally used for a game of "Quilt Bingo". These bingo blocks were then subsequently included in the "Bingo quilt" along with the pinwheel blocks.
