We kicked off our 2023-2024 guild season with a well attended, information packed meeting on September 27. Guest Presentation We were treated to an excellent presentation by Madonna Oliver from Paisleys Quilt Shop and some representatives of the sewing group from the St James Anglican Church in Carp, Gillian, Lois and Lise. They brought the five panels they handmade using a combination of appliqué, embroidery and quilting. Created to represent the four seasons in Carp, as well as Peace, Love, Hope, Joy and Faith, Madonna explained with slides the steps of their journey, including how they had obtained a grant for community involvement and evolved the idea of these panels. One of the group was an artist and the others had varying degrees of sewing experience. With time and collaboration, meeting at Paisleys weekly, they evolved the ideas which have resulted in these spectacular panels. They shared their experience of how they evolved and developed the vision for them, including helping the members of this group to develop the skills needed to sew these different techniques as well as connecting them to each other and their community. These panels now hang in their churches on a rotation. They answered questions and had the panels on display during our meeting, welcoming our members to come over for a closer look at the break. We are grateful to Madonna and her sewing group for sharing their experience. Programs We were introduced to a number of programs for this year including the stained glass Block of the Month (BOM), the return of the popular Tinners block exchange, and a retreat. There was a colourful display of the bags made for the Summer Presidents' Challenge issued to use in June by incoming co-presidents Anne and Joyce. And great news when Lucy Shorey volunteered to take on the very important Programs leadership role! Thank you Lucy! Click/tap a photo in the gallery to see it in full. A GAME! The 20 1/2" strips of fabric that we were asked to bring to the meeting were the focus of a dice game where a player from each table went home with their winnings of a stack of fabric strips. MORE
Our break provided an opportunity to get a close look at the church panels. visit the Library, indulge in a little shopping at Madonna's pop-up Paisleys shop, check out the BOM sample block, and grab a drink and a snack. There was a very inspiring Show-and-Tell - photos. The meeting wrapped up with the door prize and 50-50 draws, and the draw for the Library "guess the number of pages" book. What a wonderful start to our new guild year! Comments are closed.
